Rosas LG, Azar KMJ, Lv N, et al. - Given the successful management of comorbid obesity and depression by an integrated collaborative care intervention, researchers compared the use of such an intervention for obesity and depression with usual care to define the influence of the integrated intervention on quality of life and psychosocial functioning (secondary outcomes). They also investigated the correlation between improvements in these secondary outcomes and improvements in the primary outcomes of weight and depressive symptoms. Participants were selected from primary care clinics in Northern California and included adult primary care patients (n = 409) with BMI values of ≥ 30 (≥ 27, if Asian). A behavioral weight loss program and problem-solving therapy were combined with as-needed antidepressant medications for depression in this 12-month intervention. According to findings, an integrated collaborative care intervention for obesity and depression may also benefit quality of life and psychosocial functioning over 6 months. The researchers noted that improvements in obesity-associated problems and sleep disturbance were related to lower BMI. They also reported fewer depressive symptoms in correlation with improvements in the physical and mental health components of the Short Form-8 Health Survey, as well as sleep disturbance and sleep-associated impairment.
