Velders MA, et al. - Researchers utilized nationwide Swedish quality registries to determine the prevalence of cancer among patients with first myocardial infarction (MI), as well as to investigate its influence on cardiovascular and bleeding outcomes. They selected all patients who were admitted for the first MI between 2001 and 2014. The registered patients with first MI were 175,146 in total. Among these, care for cancer was received by 9.3% (16 237) in the 5 years prior to admission. A rise in cancer rate from 6.7% in the years 2001–2002 to 10.7% in 2013–2014 was reported, independent of gender and cancer type. A rise from 4.9% to 6.2% was also observed for the presence of new cancer diagnosis within 5 years. Overall, the increasing prevalence of cancer as a comorbid disorder was documented. Findings also revealed a strong link of cancer with mortality, severe bleeding, and adverse cardiovascular outcome following first MI.
