Incidence, trends, and outcomes of type 2 myocardial infarction in a community cohort

Circulation Feb 18, 2020

Raphael CE, Roger VL, Sandoval Y, et al. - To determine population-based incidence and trends of type 2 myocardial infarction (T2MI) as well as to completely describe long-term results of this entity, researchers performed this study with prospectively selected inhabitants of Olmsted County, Minnesota, who encountered an event related to a cardiac troponin T > 99th percentile of a normal reference population (≥ 0.01 ng/mL) between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2012. Findings highlighted that over a decade, the type of myocardial infarction occurring in the community has evolved. Now, T2MI incidence was reported to be similar to that of type 1 myocardial infarction. Death following T2MI was reported to be higher and was driven by early and noncardiovascular mortality. Long-term survival was influenced by the provoking mechanism of supply/demand mismatch. The healthcare burden of T2MI was emphasized by these revelations.
