Wongtrakul W, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the risk of osteoporosis among individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Two independent reviewer searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar database up to October 2019. Researchers distinguished 320 articles from the three databases, four cohorts and one cross-sectional study including a total of 526,633 individuals. Among IBS individuals, a significantly increased risk of osteoporosis was seen in this study. The outcomes of this study indicated that early intervention to prevent the development of osteoporosis, such as weight-bearing exercise, adequate intake of vitamin D and calcium, and early screening for osteoporosis, may be useful to these individuals although future research is still needed to confirm the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of this procedure.
