Family history of colorectal cancer and survival: A Swedish population-based study

Journal of Internal Medicine Feb 11, 2020

Pesola F, et al. - Using data from the Swedish Colorectal Cancer registry (SCRCR) linked with the Multigeneration and the National Cancer register, researchers investigated the association between family history and prognosis and, based on current evidence, evaluated whether this association was modified by age at diagnosis. They identified 31,801 individuals with a CRC that was diagnosed between 2007 and 2016, and calculated excess mortality rate ratios (EMRR) for relative survival and HRs for disease-free survival with 95% CIs via flexible parametric models. No relationship was found between family history and relative survival or disease-free survival. According to findings, young people with a family history of CRC may have greater health awareness, attend an opportunistic screening, and adopt lifestyle changes, leading to earlier diagnosis and better prognosis.
