Dairy consumption and risk of falls in 2 European cohorts of older adults
Clinical Nutrition Feb 10, 2020
Machado-Fragua MD, Struijk EA, Caballero FF, et al. - Utilizing data from two cohorts of community-dwellers aged ≥ 60 years: the Seniors-ENRICA cohort with 2,981 people, and the UK Biobank cohort with 8,927 candidates, researchers evaluated the prospective connection between dairy consumption and risk of falls among older adults. In the Seniors-ENRICA, dairy consumption was evaluated with a validated diet history in 2008-10, and falls have been ascertained up to 2015. Dairy consumption was obtained in the UK Biobank study with 3-5 multiple-pass 24-h food records in 2006-10, and falls were evaluated until 2016. In total, 801 people in the Seniors-ENRICA and 201 in the UK Biobank experienced ≥ 1 fall. The data presented in this work showed a null connection between habitual dairy consumption and the risk of falling in older adults. If milk consumption, as found in the UK Biobank cohort, will increase the risk of falls is worth further research.
