Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 99 cases of 2019 novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan, China: A descriptive study

The Lancet Feb 09, 2020

Chen N, Zhou M, Dong X, et al. - Pneumonia correlated with the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Researchers sought to clarify the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 2019-nCoV pneumonia. Researchers conducted a retrospective, single-center study including all confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV in Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital between Jan 1 and Jan 20, 2020. This study recruited a total of 99 individuals including 67 men and 32 women and the average age of the individuals was 55·5 years (SD 13·1). The results reported that the 2019-nCoV infection was of clustering onset, is more likely to influence older males with comorbidities, and can appear in severe and even fatal respiratory diseases such as acute respiratory distress syndrome. Overall, symptoms of individuals who died were in line with the MuLBSTA score, an early warning model for prognosticating mortality in viral pneumonia. In order to investigate the applicability of the MuLBSTA score in predicting the risk of mortality in 2019-nCoV infection, future study is required.
