Effect of clinical geriatric assessments and collaborative medication reviews by geriatrician and family physician for improving health-related quality of life in home-dwelling older patients receiving polypharmacy: A cluster randomized clinical trial
JAMA Internal Medicine Feb 09, 2020
Romskaug R, Skovlund E, Straand J, et al. - A cluster-randomized clinical trial was designed to examine the impact of clinical geriatric assessments and collaborative medication reviews by geriatrician and family physician (FP) on health-related quality of life and other patient-relevant outcomes in home-dwelling older patients receiving polypharmacy. A sum of 174 individuals were enrolled between March 17, 2015, and March 16, 2017, to participate in the trial. In this study, health-related quality of life was considered as the primary endpoint. The changes in medication appropriateness, physical and cognitive functioning, use of health services, and mortality were the secondary endpoints. The data showed that clinical geriatric evaluations and collaborative medication reviews carried out by a geriatrician in cooperation with the individual’s FP can occur in positive impacts on health-related quality of life among older individuals exposed to polypharmacy.
