Association between prescribed opioids and infections in patients with neutropenia and cancer

Jakob CEM, Stecher M, Claßen AY, et al. - The prospective cologne cohort of neutropenic individuals was applied to validate this observation in individuals with chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. In a recent article, Edelman, and colleagues1 distinguished a relationship between prescribed opioids and risk for community-acquired pneumonia among individuals with and without HIV infection. This is of interest to immunocompromised individuals receiving opioids for cancer pain.
