Osterberg EC, Veith J, Brown CVR, et al. - Researchers conducted an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma multi-institutional retrospective study from 2004 to 2015 including traumatic rectal injury patients who were admitted to one of 22 participating centers in order to determine if patients with combined traumatic injuries to the rectum and bladder have worse outcomes than those with rectal injury alone. The traumatic rectal injury was reported in 424 patients; of these, 117 (28%) sustained a combined injury to the bladder. Outcomes suggest that in patients with traumatic rectal injury, sustaining a concomitant bladder injury did not result in an increase in the rates of abdominal complications, mortality, or length of stay. Furthermore, no change in outcomes was evident when a diverting colostomy was added in the management of traumatic bladder and rectal injury.
