Diabetes mellitus among adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia: A report from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study

Cancer Feb 03, 2020

Williams HE, Howell CR, Chemaitilly W, et al. – Researchers investigated the prevalence and risk factors of diabetes mellitus among clinically assessed adult survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). From the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study, researchers identified 1,360 adults who were ≥ 10-year survivors of childhood ALL; of these, 1,044 completed the evaluations. They assessed 368 individuals as controls. Observations revealed increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus among adult survivors of childhood ALL. Among survivors, older age, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, and drug-induced diabetes mellitus occurring during ALL therapy were associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus in adjusted models.
