Long term outcomes of dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease patients requiring critical care: An observational matched cohort study

Internal Medicine Journal Feb 02, 2020

Secombe P, et al. - This study was undertaken to illustrate the long-term outcome and resource utilization of CKD5D patients requiring critical care admission. A retrospective matched cohort study in the Intensive Care Unit of Alice Springs Hospital was performed. Between 1 January 2011 and 31 Dec 2013, CKD5D individuals were matched by gender, age, Indigenous status and APACHE III score in a 1:1 ratio with a patient without CKD5D. During acute illness, CKD5D individuals frequently need intensive care. The time to death is longer suggesting mortality is related to chronic disease progression rather than their acute illness, while they have an equivalent five-year survival rate. The data indicated the appearance of CKD5D in isolation should not be a reason to limit critical care.
