Accuracy of ultrasound in identifying renal scarring as compared with DMSA scan

Urology Feb 02, 2020

Finkelstein JB, Rague JT, Chow J, et al. - This study was undertaken to evaluate the accuracy of renal ultrasound (RUS) in detecting renal scarring (RS). Between 2006 and 2009, all initial DMSA scans conducted for the history of urinary tract infection (UTI) or vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in individuals under 14 years old were distinguished, and clinical history collected via chart review. A sum of 144 individuals had initial DMSA scans conducted for UTI or VUR, with a RUS within 4 months, and no UTI between the two studies. The renal ultrasound showed poor sensitivity for RS visualized on the DMSA scan. RUS was found to be a poor screening test for RS or indicators of the future renal scar. Results showed that a normal ultrasound does not rule out RS or risk of the future renal scar. They found excellent specificity of RUS.
