Preoperative pelvic floor muscle exercise for early continence after holmium laser enucleation of the prostate: A randomized controlled study
BMC Urology Jan 29, 2020
Anan G, Kaiho Y, Iwamura H, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain the advantage of preoperatively started preoperative pelvic floor muscle exercise (PFME) for early recovery of continence after holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). In this trial, they included a sum of 70 individuals. Individuals were allocated randomly to start PFME preoperatively and continue postoperatively (group A) or start PFME no earlier than the postoperative period (group B). They conducted univariate and multivariate analyses to distinguish parameters associated with the recovery of continence after HoLEP. There were no differences in patients’ characteristics between groups A and B. Compared with group B, the postoperative urinary incontinence rate significantly reduced in group A, at 3 months postoperatively. The results indicated that preoperatively started PFME seems to help the improvement of early urinary continence after HoLEP.
