Race, tumor location, and disease progression among low-risk prostate cancer patients

Cancer Medicine Jan 29, 2020

Mygatt JG, Cullen J, Streicher SA, et al. - By performing this retrospective cohort analysis, researchers examined men with newly diagnosed, biopsy-verified, NCCN (National Cancer Comprehensive Network)-defined low risk prostate cancer (CaP) who had a radical prostatectomy at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center from 1996 to 2008, to determine the independent as well as joint roles of patient race and tumor location on biochemical recurrence-free (BCR) survival in these patients. By using Kaplan-Meier estimation curves and multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses, they modeled BCR-free survival. The study sample comprised 539 patients with low-risk CaP, of those, 25% were African American, and 75% were Caucasian American. Experts found that neither race nor predominant tumor location was related to adverse oncologic outcome.
