Storeng SH, et al. - In order to know the impact of complex multimorbidity on activities of daily living and mortality in older Norwegians, researchers analyzed individuals who were 60–69-year-olds at baseline in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study 1995-1997 (HUNT2) (n = 9,058). Among participants, 47.8% satisfied the criteria of complex multimorbidity at baseline (HUNT2). They found a strong association of the presence of complex multimorbidity with the necessity for assistance in instrumental activities of daily living in HUNT3 11 years later, as well as a moderate link of complex multimorbidity with death during the follow-up time. A link between complex multimorbidity and activities of daily living was shown for the first time ever in this study. To avert future disability in older individuals, more attention should be given to complex multimorbidity.
