Mazloumi M, Vichitvejpaisal P, Dalvin LA, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to examine the efficiency of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) classification for anticipating uveal melanoma (UM)-related metastasis vs the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) classification. Six hundred forty-two patients [mean (SD) age was 58.0 (13.8) years] with UM treated with plaque radiotherapy at a tertiary referral center from October 1, 2008, to December 31, 2018, were assessed. According to both AJCC and TCGA classifications, there were 642 tumors from 642 individuals classified. Compared with the AJCC classification, TCGA classification had a higher value for the forecast of distant uveal melanoma metastasis. Findings indicate that the TCGA classification is superior to the AJCC classification for robust risk prediction of metastasis associated with uveal melanoma. Once genetic testing is available, the classification of TCGA can provide a more precise way of identifying patients at high metastasis risk who might benefit from adjuvant therapy.
