Endoscopic subperichondrial transseptal transsphenoidal approach is safe and efficient for non-extended pituitary surgery

European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Jan 23, 2020

Favier V, Le Corre M, Segnarbieux F, et al. - In this single-centre retrospective study, researchers reported the outcomes of a series of individuals undergoing the endoscopic subperichondrial transseptal (STRAS) approach for pituitary surgery and tested the effectiveness and the safety of this approach. The sample consisted of all individuals (n = 119) undergoing pituitary lesion resection vis the STRAS approach from January 2002 to December 2017 by a multidisciplinary surgical team (ENT and neurosurgeon). According to results, the STRAS approach is an elegant approach to the sphenoid sinus that allows the intrasphenoidal anatomical landmarks to be well exposed, with maximum nasal mucosa preservation. This approach allows the surgeon to carry out an intrasellar work using a two-hand or four-hand technique with great comfort and safety. No patient died or was experiencing a neurological deficit.
