Cytological sampling of fallopian tubes using a hysteroscopic catheter: A multi-center study
Gynecologic Oncology Jan 16, 2020
Powell CB, et al. - Researchers performed this prospective, multicenter, single-arm pilot investigation, to determine whether a new hysteroscopic catheter affords a feasible tool to obtain fallopian tube cytologic samples, as well as to correlate cytologic findings with histopathology. The participants were selected from 3 gynecologic oncology centers and comprised women receiving salpingo-oophorectomy for a pelvic mass suspicious for malignancy or for the prevention of cancer for BRCA mutation carriers. Hysteroscopies were performed in 40 patients with 78 fallopian tubes, of which 65 ostia (83%) were recognized. Successful catheterization of 61 (72%) of these was done, providing 44 (68%) cytology samples adequate for further assessment: 5 were categorized as positive (3 neoplastic and 2 malignant) and 39 as negative (34 benign and 5 reactive/atypical). According to the findings, an evaluable cytologic sample was obtained in 68% of cases by the deployment of the device, with a high rate of concordance with histopathology. Further assessment of the potential of the device to identify malignancy in high-risk groups is warranted.
