Perspectives regarding hospice services and transfusion access: Focus groups with blood cancer patients and bereaved caregivers

Journal of Pain and Symptom Management Jan 16, 2020

Henckel C, et al. - Given the low rates of timely hospice use among patients with blood cancers and lack of transfusion access in most hospice settings being possibly a potential reason for this, researchers examined the perspectives of these patients and their bereaved caregivers concerning the value of hospice services and transfusions. From June 2018 to January 2019, they assessed three focus groups with blood cancer patients with an estimated life expectancy of ≤ 6 months and two focus groups with bereaved caregivers of blood cancer patients. The five focus groups comprised 27 participants, including 18 patients, and nine bereaved caregivers. Findings suggest that blood cancer patients value hospice services, however, they also acknowledge transfusions vital to their quality of life. In order to optimize end-of-life care for these patients, they identified innovative care delivery models that link the elements of standard hospice services with other patient-valued services like transfusions as valuable.
