Incidence of surgical site infection after spine surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Zhou J, et al. - Researchers designed a systematic review and meta-analysis in order to examine the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) in people following spine surgery and the rate of microorganisms in these cases. For relevant studies, they searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases and reported the incidence of SSI following spine surgery, and manually screened reference lists for further studies. In 22,475 people, meta-analysis comprised 27 studies, with 603 SSI cases. It was observed that pooled SSI incidence was 3.1%. The incidence of superficial SSI was 1.4% and the incidence of deep SSI was 1.7% was shown in subgroup analysis. In people with neuromuscular scoliosis, the highest incidence was found with different indications. The incidences of SSI in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine were 3.4%, 3.7%, and 2.7%, respectively. The authors observed that after spine surgery, the pooled incidence of SSI was 3.1%. Perhaps these figures was helpful in the estimation of the probability of SSI after spine surgery.
