The utilization of CTA in management of gastrointestinal bleeding in a tertiary care center ED. Are we using it enough?

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Jan 16, 2020

Stewart K, et al. - As it is difficult to diagnose the source of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, a common patient presentation to the emergency department (ED), researchers here investigated the use of computed tomography angiography (CTA) for diagnosis and treatment of GI bleeds in an academic tertiary care center ED. They conducted retrospective chart review of 1,493 patients (2012–2015), one - way ANOVA, and one-tail t-test and identified significantly less use of CTA (0.7%) compared with classical endoscopy (75.7%), video capsule endoscopy (4.8%), tagged red blood cell scintigraphy(4.4%), and traditional catheter-directed angiography(2.88%). This work validates CTA use against the other diagnostic modalities but suggests its possible underutilization in the care of patients with GI bleeding
