Impact of high-altitude therapy on type-2 immune responses in asthma patients

Boonpiyathad T, Capova G, Duchna HW, et al. - Researchers focused on how clinical and immunological response in asthma is influenced by high-altitude treatment, given asthma patients exhibit distinct immunological profiles, with a predominance of type 2 endotype. This study was performed on 26 hospitalized asthma patients, including nine eosinophilic allergic, nine noneosinophilic allergic and eight noneosinophilic nonallergic cases, and nine healthy controls in high altitude for 21 days. Employing flow cytometry, the evaluation of eosinophils, T cells, Tregs, and innate lymphoid cells from peripheral blood was performed. The consequences of asthma treatment in high altitude, as reported in this study, were: reduction in type 2 immune response, correction of the raised chemoattractant receptor homolog expressed on Th2 cells expression and its dysregulated functions.
