Incidence of myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular accident with hidradenitis suppurativa

JAMA Jan 16, 2020

Reddy S, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort analysis to correlate risk of myocardial infarction (MI), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), and composite disease (MI or CVA) in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), stratified by use of biologic agents, with controls without hidradenitis HS. They performed a retrospective cohort analysis between January 1, 1999, and April 1, 2019, using a demographically heterogeneous population-based sample of over 56 million unique patients. They determined individuals with HS (n = 49,862) and without HS (n = 1421,223) using electronic health records data. Incidence of composite MI or CVA was considered as a primary outcome. Including MI and CVA, HS appears to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events; patients with HS may benefit from screening and early management of risk mediators.
