Identification of alcohol risk drinking behaviour in pregnancy using a web-based questionnaire: Large-scale implementation in antenatal care

Alcohol and Alcoholism Jan 16, 2020

Weile LKK, et al. - Researchers investigated the feasibility of a web-based questionnaire when gathering information on alcohol consumption in pregnancy to recognize women with risk drinking behavior. Further, they sought for factors linked with risk drinking behavior, and the use of specialized care for prenatal risk drinking. The web-based questionnaire was completed by 2,168 women, who were referred to antenatal care at Odense University Hospital, Denmark, April–October 2018 and provided information on alcohol intake. Outcomes support the feasibility of a web-based questionnaire when gathering information on alcohol consumption in pregnancy to identify risk drinking behavior. Among 2,097 women giving data on alcohol intake, 77 (4%) had risk drinking behavior. Higher alcohol consumption prior to pregnancy, spontaneous conception, younger age, nulliparity and a higher level of physical activity in pregnancy were noted to be connected with risk drinking. Amongst 47 women with risk drinking behavior contacted by phone, examinations of the child by pediatrician and child psychologist were accepted by five (11%, 95% CI 4–23%), and reference to specialized antenatal care was observed in < 3 (not further specified due to small numbers). This indicates a low acceptance among women with risk drinking behavior for referral to specialized care.
