The key role of VEGF in the cross talk between pterygium and dry eye and its clinical significance

Ophthalmic Research Jan 16, 2020

Liu C, Song Y, Wang X, et al. - Experts aspired to explore if dry eye severity is a risk factor for pterygium activity and if vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is crucial in the cross talk between pterygium and dry eye. In total, 103 individuals with primary pterygium (Pteg) were involved in the study group. They were divided into two groups according to the complication of dry eye (DE) (Pteg + DE group, Pteg – DE group). Moreover, 60 patients with just dry eye (DE group) and 60 normal individuals (normal) were involved as 2 control groups. In the development of dry eye and pterygium, inflammation played a significant role. VEGF was the core molecule in the cross talk, which could explain the high incidence of these two diseases coexisting together.
