Prevalence and phylogenetic characterization of hepatitis C among men who have sex with men in India: Limited evidence for sexual transmission
The Journal of Infectious Diseases Jan 16, 2020
Clipman SJ, Duggal P, Srikrishnan AK, et al. - As there are limited data regarding hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence/incidence among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) from low-and-middle-income countries, researchers assessed 4,994 MSM (Median age: 25) from 5 states across India. Among these, HIV prevalence of 7.2% was noted and recent unprotected anal intercourse was reported in 49.3%. Observations revealed a low HCV prevalence in this large sample of MSM despite a high prevalence of known risk factors. They identified HCV prevalence of 1.3%; 3.1% vs 1.1% among HIV-positive vs HIV-negative. This indicates either the requirement for a threshold of HCV for sexual transmission and/or variability in sexual practices across settings.
