Lee T, Cho J, et al. - Given that nuclear protein in testis (NUT) carcinoma is a poorly differentiated carcinoma that is defined by the presence of NUT gene rearrangement, researchers determined NUT expression with clinicopathologic features in 362 patients of poorly differentiated or undifferentiated carcinomas in the head and neck. In addition, they reviewed the relevant literature reports. This is the largest work on the prevalence of NUT carcinoma in head and neck areas. A strong nuclear expression for NUT-specific monoclonal antibody was observed in four (4/362, 1.1%) cases, and all these tumors were in the sinonasal tract (4/40, 10%). Unlike previous descriptions, diverse clinical outcome and histology were observed. Although previous studies reported different frequency results, relatively constant frequencies in the sinonasal tract were evident in the study individuals (10/80, 12.5%). They suggest including it in the differential diagnosis of poorly differentiated carcinoma, especially in the sinonasal tract.
