Dual kidney transplantation offers a safe and effective way to use kidneys from deceased donors older than 70 years
BMC Nephrology Jan 13, 2020
Lee KW, Park JB, Cha SR, et al. - Given dual kidney transplantation (DKT) affords a strategy to extend the use of kidneys from expanded criteria donors (ECDs), researchers performed a comparison of the results of DKT vs those of single kidney transplantation from standard criteria donors (SCDs) and ECDs. Overall 15 DKT recipients were compared with 124 patients who received a kidney from an SCD and 80 patients who received a kidney from an ECD, focusing on the outcomes. Older age, a higher diabetes burden, and a higher serum creatinine (sCr) level were seen in DKT donors vs ECDs and SCDs. A lower nadir sCr and shorter duration to nadir sCr were observed in DKT recipients vs single ECD kidney transplantation (KT) recipients. Findings revealed compatibility between survival rates of DKT grafts and those of single KT grafts, and thus, DKT may be regarded as an appropriate choice to expand the donor pool.
