Effects of milrinone on renal perfusion, filtration and oxygenation in patients with acute heart failure and low cardiac output early after cardiac surgery

Journal of Critical Care Jan 14, 2020

Lannemyr L, et al. - Researchers investigated the influences of inodilator milrinone on kidneys when it is administered to treat heart failure following weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Prospective evaluation of renal blood flow, glomerular filtration rate, and renal oxygenation, in 26 patients undergoing cardiac surgery with CPB, was done using renal vein catheterization. Milrinone was administered to those who suffered acute heart failure and low cardiac output at 30 min following weaning from CPB (n = 7). The rest were considered as controls (n = 19). At 60 min post-CPB, additional measurements were performed. Findings revealed improved renal oxygenation accompanying milrinone-induced rise in cardiac output in patients with acute heart failure following weaning from CPB.
