Hemodialysis patients with pruritus and insomnia have increased risk of death

Orasan OH, Muresan F, Mot A, et al. - In view of the information that pruritus and insomnia often develop in hemodialysis (HD) patients and are related to poor quality of life and increased mortality, researchers assessed survival of HD patients presenting either none, one, or both disorders and compared certain characteristics between these groups. This study included 170 patients managed by HD or online hemodiafiltration. They found lower survival in patients with both pruritus and insomnia, at 20 months. A lower Kt/V was observed in patients with pruritus alone compared with those with no complaints or insomnia alone. Lower C-reactive protein and higher albumin levels were detected in patients with no complaints compared with those with insomnia alone or both conditions. Since pruritus and insomnia significantly influence survival in HD patients, these conditions should be actively examined and correlated with some clinical and laboratory features.
