Predicting clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty from preoperative radiographic factors of the knee osteoarthritis

Toguchi K, Nakajima A, Akatsu Y, et al. - In this study, researchers involved 110 knees of 110 consecutive people who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for varus knees in order to classified individuals with varus knee deformities in combination with preoperative radiographic factors and examine how radiographic characteristics would prognosticate satisfied or dissatisfied people following TKAs. They evaluated the preoperative varus deformities by the femorotibial angle (FTA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) and lateral distal femoral angle, and classified as a severe varus (SV) or a mild varus (MV) group. In comparison with MV group varus deformities were determined by FTA, regardless of OS, postoperative KOOS subscales and/or the improvement rates were notably greater in the SV group. Among groups, when varus defined by MPTA, regardless of OS, there were no notable differences in postoperative KOOS subscales. Overall, in combination with OS, the authors classified OA types by radiographic measurements of femur and tibia. Postoperative people-reported results were better in individuals with SV knees but were poor in people with knees with MV deformity and fewer osteophytes.
