The experience of hearing loss in adult survivors of childhood and young adult cancer: A qualitative study

Cancer Jan 11, 2020

Khan A, Mubdi N, Budnick A, et al. - In the current study, researchers investigated the lived experience of hearing loss in survivors of childhood and young adult cancers to guide survivorship care. Semistructured telephone interviews were performed among 24 survivors. From the interviews, three primary themes appeared: first, the association of posttreatment hearing loss with isolation and feelings of exclusion was observed; second, clinicians play a significant role in providing education to survivors concerning hearing loss and hearing aids; finally, hearing loss for survivors may be deprioritized as it is a reminder of the cancer history and is understood within the context of other therapy-related late effects.
