Daytime napping and successful aging among older adults in China: A cross-sectional study
BMC Geriatrics Jan 10, 2020
Xin C, et al. - Utilizing data from the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study carried out in 2015, researchers undertook this analysis among China’s older adults, focusing on the link between daytime napping and successful aging (including its five dimensions, “low probability of disease,” “no disease-related disability,” “high cognitive functioning,” “high physical functioning,” and “active engagement with life”). This study included 7,469 participants. Taking five dimensions of successful aging into account, a negative link of moderate and long daytime napping with “low probability of disease” was identified; negative links of long daytime napping with “no disease-related disability” and “high physical functioning” were noted and there were positive links of moderate daytime napping with “high cognitive functioning” and “active engagement with life.” Findings revealed a lower probability of successful aging in relation to long daytime napping among the elderly in China. There is a need for special attention for elderly individuals who sleep for longer duration both during day and night.
