Kim SJ, Reed N, Betz JF, et al. - Experts aspired to explore if microvascular retinal signs were correlated with an age-related hearing loss attributable to a hypothesized underlying shared pathologic entity involving microvascular disease. The data presented in this work showed an association between retinopathy and hearing loss in a small group of people without diabetes (n = 42) and in the total cohort in this cohort study of a subset of the ARIC-NCS candidates who had retinal fundus photography in 2011-2013 and hearing assessment in 2016-2017 (n = 1,458). The estimated difference in hearing thresholds was −4.24 at 8 kHz in people with retinopathy vs those without retinopathy. A diagnosis of retinopathy can potentially be used to identify those at higher risk of hearing loss in people without diabetes.
