The impact of alcohol consumption and physical activity on breast cancer: The role of breast cancer risk

International Journal of Cancer Dec 26, 2019

Rainey L, Eriksson M, Trinh T, et al. - Because high alcohol intake and physical inactivity are known breast cancer risk factors, researchers performed a population-based, prospective cohort study to investigate whether the association between these lifestyle factors and breast cancer may be altered by a woman's additional breast cancer risk factors. This study included 57,654 Swedish women aged 40-74 years, which was inclusive of 957 breast cancer cases. Via validated web-based self-report questionnaires, the investigators measured alcohol consumption and physical activity. A woman's 10-year risk of developing breast cancer was assessed using the Tyrer-Cuzick risk prediction model. A higher breast cancer risk was observed in relation to increased alcohol consumption. However, for women at below average, average, and above-average risk of developing breast cancer, they reported a generally comparable link between lifestyle factors (alcohol intake and physical activity) and breast cancer. Thus, there seemed to be no modifying influence of additional breast cancer risk factors on the link between lifestyle (alcohol consumption and physical activity) and breast cancer.
