RNA expression profiling of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the bladder reveals a basal-like molecular subtype

American Journal of Pathology Dec 19, 2019

Manocha U, Kardos J, Selitsky S, et al. - Investigators identified 16 cases of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the bladder (LELC-B) at Johns Hopkins University and conducted RNA sequencing on fourteen cases to understand the underlying biology of LELC-B and to molecularly describe through RNA expression profiling as well as immunohistochemistry. The study demonstrated that analogous to basal tumors, LELC-B tumors were enhanced in a basal-like molecular subtype and shared a high level of immune infiltration and programmed cell death ligand 1 expression. Therefore, in this rare disease, the basal-like phenotype was constant with the known sensitivity of LELC-B to chemotherapy and proposed that immune checkpoint therapy shall be examined.
