Tola A, et al. - Researchers investigated the outcomes of tuberculosis (TB) treatment and associated factors among TB-HIV co-infected patients via conducting a retrospective study among 349 TB/HIV co-infected patients who registered from 2012 to 2017 in two public hospitals in Harar town. Among these patients, the cure was achieved in 30.1%, treatment completion was reported in 56.7%, death in 7.7%, loss to follow up in 1.7%, and treatment failure in 3.7%. Overall, successful TB treatment outcomes were achieved in 86.8% of the TB-HIV co-infected patients. Relative to many previous studies, this study had higher overall rate of the success of TB treatment among TB-HIV co-infected patients. A high risk of getting poor treatment outcomes was observed in correlation to TB/HIV patients with a history of previous TB treatment, smear-positive pulmonary TB, late HIV stage, history of opportunistic infection and not being on co-trimoxazole prophylaxis therapy.
