Prospective cohort study to investigate the burden and transmission of acute gastroenteritis in care homes: Epidemiological results

BMJ Open Dec 14, 2019

Inns T, Pulawska-Czub A, Harris JP, et al. - In this prospective cohort study of five participating care homes in North West England, UK and residents and staff present at the five study care homes between 15 August 2017 and 30 May 2019, experts assessed the incidence of gastroenteritis in people in care homes. During the surveillance period, 45 cases were reported. It was discovered that in care homes, the inspection of infectious gastroenteritis disease on the basis of outbreaks, the current general approach discovered a majority of cases of gastroenteritis. Nevertheless, in this framework using only routine outbreak surveillance data, if policymakers were to evaluate the burden of infectious gastroenteritis, and not estimating for non-outbreak cases, this study indicates that the total burden would be undervalued.
