Clinical outcomes following conservative and surgical management of floating shoulder injuries: A systematic review
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Dec 14, 2019
Dombrowsky AR, et al. - A systematic review was conducted in order to investigate the existing literature on treatment and clinical outcomes of floating shoulder injuries to give a baseline understanding of current treatment approaches of this injury. A total of 17 studies that included data for 371 shoulders were recognized. As evidenced by clinical outcome scores, after both surgical fixation and nonoperative management of floating shoulder injuries, satisfactory outcomes could be expected when nearly individualized to the person. Thus, floating shoulder injuries with an important displacement of the scapular neck could profit from the surgical fixation of both the clavicle and scapula fractures. Moreover, superior outcomes could be accomplished when treated nonoperatively or with surgical fixation of the clavicle alone in those with minimal or nondisplaced scapular neck fractures.
