A neutrophil activation biomarker panel in prognosis and monitoring of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Arthritis & Rheumatology Dec 13, 2019

Bach M, et al. - Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, markers of neutrophil activation (calprotectin) and cell death (NETs) were examined in serum and plasma collected from individuals in three cross-sectional RA cohorts and gender-matched healthy controls in order to evaluate markers of neutrophil activation and NET formation in plasma samples, examining if they add clinical value in improving the ascertainment of prognosis and monitoring in RA individuals. A longitudinal inception cohort (n = 247) was used. It was found that in RA, neutrophils undergo marked activation and cell death. Thus, in the monitoring and prognosis of people with RA, neutrophil biomarkers could give additional clinical value and may provide for early preventive treatment intervention.
