Design, methodology and baseline characteristics of the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation Coronary Vascular Dysfunction (WISE-CVD)

Quesada O, AlBadri A, Wei J, et al. - Given coronary vascular dysfunction, identified by invasive coronary reactivity testing (CRT), is seen in a significant number of women having signs and symptoms of ischemia with no obstructive coronary artery disease (INOCA), but the noninvasive evaluation of coronary vascular dysfunction has been limited, and this is why researchers undertook a prospective study of women with suspected INOCA, named the Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation - Coronary Vascular Dysfunction (WISE-CVD), to determine the efficacy of noninvasive cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) to foretell coronary vascular dysfunction vs invasive CRT, as well as the prognostic significance of CMRI abnormalities for persistent symptoms of ischemia and cardiovascular consequences in women with INOCA. The enrollment of 437 women was done between 2008 to 2015. Of those, baseline CMRI was completed by 374, CRT by 279, and 1-year follow-up CMRI by 214. The sample had a mean age of 55 ± 11 years, with coronary stenosis present in 93%, and angiography-detected < 20% stenosis in 7%. For future clinical trials, a novel understanding of a non-invasive imaging modality will be offered by WISE-CVD.
