Analysis of computed tomography radiation doses used for lung cancer screening scans

Demb J, et al. - Researchers sought to characterize lung cancer screening (LCS) CT radiation doses and determine the individual and institutional factors that are associated with radiation dose variation in LCS CT scans. They assessed a cohort of 12,529 patients undergoing LCS CT scans at 72 institutions indicating wide dose variation across US institutions performing CT scans despite guidelines from the American College of Radiology on recommended CT radiation dose levels. Lower doses were reported among institutions with protocol creation limited to lead radiologists or medical physicists and collaborating internal medical physicists, whereas higher doses were reported among institutions where any radiologists could establish protocols. These findings suggest the necessity of tailoring dose optimization practices for CT radiation to specific practice types and different organizational structures to be more effective.
