Job morale of physicians in low-income and middle-income countries: A systematic literature review of qualitative studies

BMJ Open Dec 11, 2019

Overall, a limited number of studies and a great degree of heterogeneity of evidence were identified, hence calling for prospective research to aid in examining context-specific issues and ways of tackling them to maximize their use.

Sabitova A, et al. - By using a combination of search terms associated with the areas of interest like "morale", "physicians and dentists," and "low-income and middle-income countries", a primary search of electronic databases was carried out in order to systematically evaluate the literature on physicians’ and dentists’ experiences affecting job motivation and satisfaction, burnout, well-being, and symptoms of depression as markers of job morale in low- and middle-income countries.

In all, 10 papers representing 10 distinct studies and involving 581 people across 7 low-income and middle-income countries were included for analysis. In low- and middle-income countries, the job morale of physicians working was found to be principally affected by negative experiences. Physicians’ job morale may be positively affected by escalating salaries, opportunities for career and professional development, enhancing physical and social working environment, executing clear professional guidelines and protocols, and effectively handling healthcare staff shortage.
