The impact of perennial allergic rhinitis with/without allergic asthma on sleep, work and activity level

Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology Dec 11, 2019

Romano MR, et al. - Among 511 individuals with perennial allergic rhinitis (AR) (47.4% also with seasonal allergy) who were investigated via a survey, researchers looked at the influence of perennial allergy on sleep, daily activities and productivity. They recruited adults with self-reported or physician-diagnosed perennial AR aged ≥ 18 years in Denmark, France, Germany and Sweden. Utilizing online panels almost matching national population features for each country, allergy sufferers were recognized. Sleep problems were stated by 66.0% of the overall study sample. Those battling sleep issues woke, on average, 3.8 times per night, with 92.0% taking 15+ min to fall asleep (22.2% took 60+ min). Difficulty in getting back to sleep and in waking in the morning due to tiredness, upon waking at night, was reported by 40.8% and 69.2%, respectively. Overall 85.5–95.0% of individuals with sleep issues had disturbances in daily functioning because of sleep problems across all aspects examined. Overall work impairment was 53.3% and activity impairment was 47.1%. Findings revealed a common occurrence of sleep problems in perennial AR sufferers as well as an influence of sleep issues on daily functioning. A greater burden was observed in those with both AR and allergic asthma vs AR alone.
