Titanium plate removal in orthognathic surgery: Prevalence, causes and risk factors. A systematic literature review and meta-analysis

International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Dec 08, 2019

Gómez-Barrachina R, et al. - Via conducting a thorough search of the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases, researchers examined the prevalence of titanium plate removal in orthognathic surgery and the causes of plate removal, as well as determined the associated risk factors. The criteria for inclusion were studies of adult patients who had orthognathic surgery in which monocortical titanium plates and screws were placed. Nineteen were involved in the qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis of the 325 references identified. Infection, exposed plate, thermal sensitivity, palpable plate or screw, and pain/tenderness were the main causes of removal. The main risk factors were female gender, smoking, and plates placed in the lower jaw, with odds ratios of 1.5, 2.5, and 1.8, respectively. Plates placed in the lower jaw is a risk factor that is not important. A publication bias problem has not been found in any case.
