The effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on chronic subjective tinnitus

Tutar B, et al. - Using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), researchers examined the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) applied to the auricula for treating tinnitus. They randomly divided 60 patients into 3 groups of 20 patients: in the first group (A), one ear was stimulated with TENS; in the second group (B), both ears were stimulated; in Group C (placebo group) no electrical or sound stimulation was performed. A total of 10 sessions with a maximum of 4 days between the sessions were undertaken in all group patients. Following the treatment, a significant decrease in the THI and DASS scores was observed. Between group difference was shown after treatment. Findings suggest the therapeutic efficacy of TENS for subjective chronic tinnitus as well as its placebo effect.
