Tobacco-free pharmacies and US adult smoking behavior: Evidence from CVS Health's removal of tobacco sales
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Nov 28, 2019
Ali FRM, Neff L, Wang X, et al. - Given that the sale of tobacco products has been stooped by CVS Health, the largest US pharmacy chain, in all of its retail stores nationwide, starting September 3, 2014, in view of this information, researchers performed this study to determine how cigarette smoking behaviors among US adult smokers are influenced by removing tobacco sales from CVS Health. For this purpose, they joined CVS Health retail location data (2012–2016) with data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which is a phone-based survey including the non-institutionalized civilian population aged ≥ 18 years. A 2.21% rise in quit attempt rates was observed in smokers residing in counties with high CVS density (≥ 3.5 CVS stores per 100,000 people) vs smokers dwelling in counties without CVS stores, as observed during the 2-year period after the removal of tobacco sales from CVS Health. This impact was found to be greater in urban areas, however, no statistically significant influence was identified in rural regions. Experts concluded that cessation in US adults who are trying to quit smoking, especially in urban areas, could be supported by eliminating tobacco sales in retail pharmacies.
