Risk of cardiovascular events in patients with hypertriglyceridemia: A review of real-world evidence

Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Nov 24, 2019

Toth PP, et al. - Using large patient databases (NHANES (2007–2014), Optum Research Database, and electronic medical records from two Kaiser Permanente regions), researchers characterized the real-world prevalence and consequences of hypertriglyceridemia. NHANES data showed that ~26% of US adults, involving approximately one-third of statin users, have at least borderline hypertriglyceridemia, and ~40% of adults with diabetes have levels of ≥ 150 mg/dL despite statin use. According to findings, elevated triglycerides are prevalent and commonly linked to increased cardiovascular risk. Cardiovascular outcomes trials in patients with established hypertriglyceridemia will clarify whether triglyceride reduction strategies can improve residual cardiovascular risk in statin-taking patients.
