Comparative efficacy and safety of new surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia: Systematic review and network meta-analysis

BMJ Nov 21, 2019

Huang SW, Tsai CY, Tseng CS, et al. - In this systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials contrasting vapourization, resection, and enucleation of the prostate using monopolar, bipolar, or different laser systems (holmium, thulium, potassium titanyl phosphate, or diode) as surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia, experts evaluated the efficiency and safety of various endoscopic surgical treatments for benign prostatic hyperplasia. A total of 109 trials with a total of 13,676 individuals were recognized. In comparison with monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate, eight new endoscopic surgical methods for benign prostatic hyperplasia seemed to be better in safety. Among these new treatments, compared with vaporization and resection methods, enucleation methods superior maximal flow rate and international prostate symptom score values were exhibited.
